Never Trump

I know we talk a lot about the left's reaction to Trump's election (which, let's face it, has been both incredibly amusing and incredibly horrifying). But what about that collection of conservatives who were Never Trump?

I didn't vote for Trump. I didn't trust him and couldn't vote for him good conscience, so I wrote in Ted Cruz. I'm hardly a Trump supporter! I prefer to call it like I see it, and note where he's done good and where he's done bad. I don't like restricting free trade to try to bolster our economy, because it will make things more expensive for the consumer. I do like the travel ban while we figure out extreme vetting.

All this said, I have a friend who I'm going to call J who was and is adamantly Never Trump. For him, Mattis as Secretary of Defense was evil and bad because Trump did it. A wall is evil and bad an ineffective because Trump called for it. Trump is worse than Hillary. Trump is ALMOST literally Hitler. J is also former military and talks a lot about how Trump is a traitor to the state and why did he even join the military only to lose it to Trump, blah blah blah. I've seen him lose at least three friends on facebook over this, and I finally got irritated enough to reply to a post about how a wall on our border with Mexico will never work because ... because ... well his reasons aren't very rational. I haven't replied yet, but he said that the only thing that will keep our borders secure is to deny welfare to illegals. Because, don't you know, borders before welfare didn't need to exist!!!

Have you come across people like this? How do you deal with people like this? People who are conservatives, but so stupidly against Trump they've lost the ability to reason as much as the left has?

(P.S. Can we get a Trump tag?)

I don't try to. Some of my friends are liberal, so we don't speak of politics. But, someone that irrational isn't going to listen to facts or logic. It would be a waste of time.

I was listening to the news this morning, and a top military person said our success against Iran depended a lot on Trump's ability to have a positive relationship with Putin. A lot depends on Russia's reaction to what's happening and what they will do. Which puts me in mind of all the people who demanded Trump prove he hadn't colluded with Putin, by basically starting a war with him. McCain and Graham specifically. L. Graham said on O'Reilly that he wanted a red hot war with Russia.

Basically, they wanted to use and manipulate Trump and the situation since Obama didn't do what he should have at the time. I agree that Obama screwed up big time, but to try to bully and manipulate Trump wasn't fair or the right thing to do either.

Now, 2 weeks in office, it turns out that Trump did the right thing by not listening to their rants and threats. We need Russia - maybe a lot, depending on how things go.

Further, while everyone is harping about what Trump hasn't gotten done, there are still 11 members of his cabinet still waiting on senate confirmation. Including health and human services. He needs that official in place to start the Obama Care replacement plans. He just now got his Secretary of State.

He's basically been working with the Obama team who have made it their duty to derail him. How the heck is he supposed to get things done?

And the fact that Iran is threatening us with missiles, and people are foaming at the mouth because he wants to pause letting in Iranian refugees is insane. Yes, it's 6 other countries who are also a hotbed of terror. That judge is insane. And the Trump Derangement syndrome is no longer funny when they're putting our country in danger. All it would take is one Iranian suicide bomber to take out a massive amount of Americans. Or a truck full of explosives. There are too many ways of taking out a massive amount of lives.

Personally, if one person comes through while the ban is lifted who causes one American life, these people, and that Attorney General and Judge have their blood on their hands.

Yes, I'm pissed. How did you know?

I am right there with you. I can't even read the full reports, it makes me so angry! I can't believe they are doing this.

But then, what's a little American blood? As long as we don't hurt the feelings of the rest of the world, that's all that matters. We probably deserve any violence we may get anyway, right?

Ugh!

I don't have any direct experience with this yet. But speaking generally, there seems to be a cultural phenomenon of an increasing inability of people to think through difficult issues.

It seems people are becoming more and more unreasonable, unwilling and seemingly *unable* to listen, and unable to logically think through things, unable to see differing points of view, etc.

I wish I had answers or something constructive to say about this. But honestly, I just sit there, horrified.

So far he's called me a jerk, patronizing, condescending, gullible and stupid. When I left to have dinner with hubby, he kept going on a long rant and basically implied I should shut up because he sacrificed by being a soldier.

I finished it off by calling him crazy.

I don't defriend people on politics, but I'm considering defriending him based on the crazy. Even the full on liberals on my flist aren't like him.

Yeesh, I'm sorry. You can't reason with people like that. Maybe at some point he will calm down and be more reasonable. You never know.

That may be so, but if he does, I've decided I won't be around to see it. I dislike cutting people off, but I'll do it if they're toxic like that. Unfriended him and his wife. (She went off on me, too, about an offhanded sentence that had very little to do with the situation at hand.)

It doesn't help he's a diabetic who doesn't have it under control, which can make a diabetic anything from irritable to flat out angry and irrational.

It's time to at least mute him. Friends don't talk to friends like that. Period.

Unfriended him and his wife. His wife is usually more reasonable, but she went off on me about how dare I assume she would be inclined to defend her husband - for three paragraphs. Didn't address him calling me names or anything else, just "How dare you, you don't know me at all".

Please. Those two are fifteen years older than me and still need to grow up.

I ended up not voting for Trump either, for the same reasons you stated. And like you, I'll cheer his good decisions and condemn his bad ones. So far, I support his immigration decisions, not happy about this seeming backtracking on Obamacare, and not happy about his recent comments about Israeli "settlements." (I hate that term.)

I don't know why it has to be all or nothing! I can't imagine any politician has ever pleased every person on EVERY single decision. Even someone you support is eventually going to do or say something on which you differ. That's life.

As with most things in our culture, my urge is to say, GROW UP!

The admin is still pushing repeal and replace. A rumor came out of Congress about anything else.

Meanwhile, people are caught in-between. Sigh.

If you go to the profile, you'll see a link called "summon a mod" and I left a note to request several tags including Trump. So, I agree and please feel free to add your request there as well. I just hope our singular mod is still around somewhere.

I didn't want to vote for Trump either, but then there was a Supreme Court nomination at stake, so I felt like I couldn't dare not to. Now he seems to be doing alright. Anyway, there's no reasoning with anti-Trump people, so you might as well troll them. If you are in an amiable mood, you could show them the cute website where you can blow Donald Trump's comb-over around with a trumpet.

Trump was not my first choice either, but when he got the nomination I became a supporter. My BFF, however, can not understand this. She is a Cruz person, which is all well and good but was so unhinged when she came for a visit last summer that I had to declare our house a politics free zone. She's a part of a never Trump group on Twitter that I had to mute because of the vulgarity and craziness. She believes he sleeps with Ivanka and is secretly a Liberal. I am flabbergasted by her ignorance. Oh, and she has stopped watching Fox News. Now this is a person who had FNC on all the time, even in her car. I'm at the point where I dread her next visit.

Oh, wow! Well, look at this way. He's brought us all together. Now BOTH sides of the political aisle have gone insane!

Good Lord. Unhinged is right.

I agree our tags need to be updated.

I haven't run into this personally. It's the libs I know I've had to mute or avoid. I can no longer hang out with the writers I know because they haven't stopped ranting and consuming MSM lies since Inauguration Day. I can't follow several friend's Facebook feeds anymore.

It's probably good that I'm considering retiring from writing in favor of other pursuits, anyway, since I've lost my community and beta readers. Book sales going in the toilet seems like the final sign to move on.

I'm in the same boat as you (I wrote in Ted Cruz, too). But I must admit; watching the hilarious mass triggering that occurred after his win almost made me wish I had voted for him. LOL

Anyhoo, I'm still wary of Trump. But I'm also supremely grateful that we dodged the Hillary bullet. So my current stance is to give him the benefit of the doubt for now, praise him when he does something good, and call him out when he does something wrong. I think that's more effective than the liberal method of running through the streets screaming "KEEP TRUMP AWAY FROM MY VAGINA!!".

Have you come across people like this? How do you deal with people like this? People who are conservatives, but so stupidly against Trump they've lost the ability to reason as much as the left has?

I haven't met any unhinged Never Trumpers personally. However, the Republican group I belong to had a couple of people who had a REALLY disturbing and anti-conservative belief that all the Never Trumpers should be shamed and treated like Pariahs (even though Trump won despite them). One guy at the club started ranting that all Republican elected officials who refused to endorse Trump should be publicly shamed and booted from their ELECTED posts because being a Republican apparently means blind loyalty to whoever wins the presidential nomination (even if said nominee is awful and completely goes against their conservative standards).
Though, on the bright side, most of the club stood up for me when I said that dude was being an idiot. So, there's still hope. :)

I haven't replied yet, but he said that the only thing that will keep our borders secure is to deny welfare to illegals. Because, don't you know, borders before welfare didn't need to exist!!!

While I agree that denying illegals incentives like welfare freebies is a good start (and a MUCH better method of deportation than actively rounding people up). I will NEVER understand why so many people think it's an either/or situation. We should have a stronger border wall AND cut back on welfare benefits to people who hop across the border and never make ANY effort to integrate with American society (aside from dropping a baby on US soil so the kid can collect welfare checks)

IMO, its pointless to debate about what to do with the illegals that are here now until we stop the flow coming in from the southern border.

I will NEVER understand why so many people think it's an either/or situation.

Exactly!
